In one what is unquestionably one of the neatest concepts in a Skylanders game, special Swap Force figures could be taken apart and mixed together to create unique combinations. It was fun to play around with the toys, and also created a lot of really fun and interesting combos in-game, supported by new challenge mini-games and dual elemental gates.
But Imaginators combined a brilliant new gimmick, the best line-up of new figures, a fully realized loot system, and a more free-roaming overland map to create the best Skylanders experience yet.
Separate Crystals were sold that could house a single created Skylander. The Crystal determined its element, while you could select on of 10 different weapon styles. Within those parameters, you had multiple basic attacks, weapon attacks, and elemental moves to choose from as you leveled up. All in-game rewards were tied to loot chests, which gave out new customization pieces, weapons, and skins for your custom Skylanders.
There was an astonishing amount of loot to collect, making your Skylanders journey fun and rewarding, though they may suffer a bit from Frankenstein syndrome. Story structure and level design saw vast improvements as well.
No longer were we stuck in a hub world, going through each level chapter by chapter. Now we could free roam around a board game-like overworld, exploring hidden secrets, taking side paths, and finding mini-games.
It cannot be overstated how much this improved every aspect the game. If you can only play one Skylanders game, make it Skylanders: Imaginators. Eric has been writing for over five years with bylines in Dicebreaker, Pixelkin, Polygon, PC Gamer and Tabletop Gaming magazine, covering movies, TV shows, video games, tabletop games and tech.
He also makes a mean tuna quesadilla. My family each has a different approach to this. The kids want the ones that have the best weapons, I'm after a collection that grants access to all areas in the game and my wife seems to be drawn to the characters that look the best.
While you can complete the game with the three you get in the starter box, there are another 29 to choose from that not only unlock new areas but offer unique attacks and power ups. I've been trawling through the various stat lists with a fellow blogger Steph Flemming and have put together this Skylanders Character List. As of June , the information on this list is as accurate as possible and will be updated as needed.
Skylanders: Imaginators was the sixth and final game in the Skylanders series, which had enjoyed about five years of popularity. As the series was dying down and most people had moved on from collecting the Skylanders figures, production numbers dropped. Because of this, the final run of Skylanders figures for the Imaginators game have become some of the rarest Skylanders out there. The rarest of these figures is Ro-Bow because this was the very last Skylanders figure ever released. All of the Skylanders: Imaginators figures were difficult to find, but Ro-Bow was nearly impossible to get.
Around December , rumors began to fly around the Skylanders community that a mysterious Red Camo and Crystal Clear Whirlwind had surfaced. Initially, fans could not pin down where the figures were coming from and why they were so hard to find. Over the Summer of , Skylanders released three very rare figures for the Skylanders: Giants game. Only 1, units of each figure were produced and released to various retailers.
Skylanders collectors had to hunt down these Metallic Purple variants, which now sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay. While the Skylanders series was still very popular, Activision would occasionally give employees special edition figures.
