But instead of going back-and-forth for hours, he decided to take the discussion in another direction, realizing the pair had way more in common than they thought — including young adult daughters.
As it turned out, just sharing something as a simple as the desire to be great parents was enough to bridge the gap in other areas. Baldwin also noted that Christians must be leading the way when it comes to ridding the country of the unhealthy division. Around the same time, Stephen also became curious and started asking questions. He has been vocal about losing roles since turning his life over to Jesus. He just goes about sharing his faith a little differently now.
Both Americans are great performers; funny, reactive, quick to get the joke. Sure I do," booms Stephen, and flips up his trouser hem to reveal his iPhone tucked into his sock. It's a great place to hide a small 38 revolver! I didn't know the Jesus freak thing was on the horizon!
Anyway, he tells me, he can't do the films he used to, because of the gratuitous violence, bad language and sex. If he were offered The Usual Suspects today — which is unlikely — he would have to say no. Off we go again, this time to Nigel Hall on Floral Street, where a stylist whizzes Stephen in and out of some nice clothes. Stephen is a laugh throughout. It impacts directly on his life: his father-in-law, who divorced Kennya's mum nine years ago, is not allowed in Stephen's house with his girlfriend.
It would be OK if they were married, but until that happens, "until he is acting in a way we feel acceptable according to our faith", then no. Earnest, smiley young people sit on cushions to hear their pastor speak.
They sit a lot longer for Stephen's talk: once he starts, he can't stop, telling them the story of his conversion, dragging it out for giggles, relishing his chance to speak freely about his faith without Vinnie Jones butting in. And he's definitely not for gay marriage. That's really the only issue for me. And so Stephen and I part company, both feeling disappointed in each other.
It's a shame, but it's one of those things. You can really like someone, but when you disagree so decisively on the way you should treat others, you can never really be friends. Honestly, what is it about American born-again Christians that makes them so intolerant?
And the thing that transformed me was coming into the understanding the things of God and the spirit of God. And I want to share that with people -- and I want to share it in a fun way. We interviewed Baldwin on a skate ramp in Houston, a recent stop on his evangelical road show, "Livin it Live. Before the "Bikers for Christ" and the "King of Kings skate team" could start the show, Baldwin insisted his riders take a safety precaution of a higher order -- an invocation.
Baldwin is now one of the most influential up-and-coming evangelicals in America. He and his holy rollers regularly sell out stadiums, and he's put out one of the best-selling skateboard DVDs of all time.
